When you have reached the end of your procrastination rope

So...I don't know...a couple of years ago, maybe? I was INSPIRED! ::jazz hands:: to do some early period clothes because why not, I guess? I think it was from the gorgeous bit of cardwoven trim I got from Catherine Weaver at my elevation - deeply inappropriate for late period stuff, but beautiful and the just the right length for a fillet to pin a veil to - and Maestra Gianna doing an A-Team Deep Dive into 7th c. Italy. And, since I try to give myself boundaries so I don't go off the rails, that seemed like a fabulous way to explore early stuff for a bit of persona history bounding.

And, since we all know that gathering supplies is its own hobby in this Hobby Made of Hobbies, I've been collecting the requisite bits and bobs as availability and finances permitted. I picked up the last two things a couple of days ago, so I guess I have to make the stuff now. 

Anyway, I have a plan, and it goes a little something like this:

Bathrobes for days!

Better-researched people may tell me that these aren't necessarily strictly Langobard, and may well be more Frankish, but the line seems to be quite blurry, and these are the images I could find (mostly from a reenactment group who focuses on this sort of thing).

At any rate, the clothes look to be standard-issue rectangular construction, with a bit of fancy trim and some bling. This is a thing I know and can do. So It will be a white linen chemise, blue wool twill overdress (not shown in any of these examples, but I live in places that are cold and damp and mama didn't raise no fool), and green diamond-twill wool caftan with turquoise and rust silk trim. I have squishy wool socks (that I will probably put leg-wraps over, because making woollen hose doesn't sound interesting or fun and I'm a bit lazy, but I also don't want it to look like modern knit socks), and a wool veil, shoes, belt, bling, and - perhaps most importantly - an appropriate cup. I should probably find some sort of pouch, too, now that I think about it.

Now, according to tradition, I should start this whole ensemble to wear to my next event, which is next weekend, because if you don't stay up late every night in the week leading up to something, and finish the last bits as you roll onto site is it even a proper outfit?

Time will tell. It's a long weekend, here, so I'll probably sort out the chemise and overdress, because they're easy and unembellished. And possibly the caftan, but the trim on that might take longer than I expect (according to tradition).

And then, after spending the last couple of years scratching some other time-period costume itches, I'm determined to get back to my 16th c. roots, because that is sounding exciting again.
